Panel Discussion "Clicks, likes and preprints: are we entering a new age of scientific publication?"
“Publish or Perish” means that to be successful in academia, scientists must publish high quality, peer-reviewed studies. However, to succeed today increasingly includes disseminating and discussing scientific results on social media or using preprints: What are the benefits from this shift towards a more open and social form of science, and what are the potential costs and consequences? In this panel, we will discuss this recent development in publishing and explore how it influences science itself, and also the ways scientists communicate with the public. The panelists include sociologist Dr. Maximilian Heimstädt, science communicator Tobias Maier, EMBO chief-editor Dr. Bernd Pulverer, science blogger Dr. Theresa Schredelseker and three biological signalling researchers Prof. Dr. Anna Bigas, Prof. Dr. Robert Grosse, Prof. Dr. Susan Mango. The discussion will be moderated by science writer Alaina Levine. It is part of the Signalling Across Scales Symposium of the University of Freiburg’s Cluster of Excellence CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies.
